There is something stable and comfortable about pencil post beds, which is good for a restful sleep. So it is no wonder that this design has stood the test of time, and I have always enjoyed making it.
Pencil post beds come in a number of variations, but this one remains my favorite. The upper section of the post is a tapered octagon ---all eight sides taper, not just four which you will see on cheap imitations. The top ends in a hand turned finial, or if you want, a canopy frame. The lower part of the taper ends in a "lambs tongue" ogee, hand carved (detail photo). At that point, the rails join the posts, with the bed bolts covered by an attractive and authentic brass cover. The lower section of the posts remain square, giving the whole a solid foundation.
Headboards come in a variety of patterns. This one is evocative of the federal era of American furniture. Other headboard designs can be easily made, however, and I would be glad to furnish you with a style sheet. The entire bed breaks down into individual parts for convenient moving.
This bed can be set up for a box spring and mattress, or with a platform and mattress. Details will be worked out when you order. Available in full and queen sizes. Shown in cherry, with other woods on request. Price for full size is $3,200, queen is $3,600.
